Recent anti-immigration laws in Alabama and Georgia (e.g., forcing public schools to determine students’ legal status) are causing immigrants to leave these states. This has left many watermelon farms without skilled laborers, leading to millions of pounds of watermelons that have been left to rot.

This article is well researched and the journalists worked alongside with the local farmers to witness the changes of the farms. This experience added a good story-telling component and credibility to the article. This article unapologetically provides a biased viewpoint about the negative impacts of anti-immigration, by using strong vocabulary such as “How did Georgia come to suffer such a painful, self-inflicted wound?”. The journalists provide a lot of their own viewpoints and judgement about the local laborers and their work. It would have added more depth to the article if they also included quotes about how the local laborers view the lack of immigrants on their farm.
